FOOD POETICS, Capturing Recipes and Stories
Part of Toast’s Slow Sunday series, ‘quiet expressions of creativity’, the workshop invited participants to explore recipes as living archives shaped by land, plants, memory, and the stories gathered around the shared table. Working from a favourite, forgotten, or meaningful plant-led recipe, food became a starting point for reflecting on personal memory, creativity, and connection.
Blending food, art, and storytelling, the gathering encouraged reflection on: the memories held within recipes, the plants and places that shape what we eat, and the ways everyday meals can preserve and carry stories across time.
Participants experimented with mixed media, using simple mark-making with cut vegetables, drawings, and reflective writing to create finished recipe narrative cards. The workshop offered a gentle space for experimentation and exchange, transforming personal recipes into visual records of memory and meaning.
Curated by TOAST with the participation of p_l_an_t and hosted in Brighton, the gathering invited the Toast community to reimagine recipes not only as instructions for food, but as living expressions of land, memory, and belonging.
